The Bumpy Road to Disillusionment: Why I Sold My Sports Bike
Real Estate:I recently sold my KTM 790 Duke, a bike I once thought I'd never part with. But the decision wasn't as difficult as I expected, and it's all because of the harsh realities of riding a sports bike in India. Four years ago, I fulfilled my dream of owning a 'superbike', but now I've come to realize that it was more of a pipe dream. The bike wasn't reliable enough, and the roads in Mumbai were far from ideal. As a homeowner now, I had to prioritize my finances, and the bike had to go.

The real reason I sold the bike, however, was that I wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Mumbai's roads are a nightmare for sports bike owners, with their bumpy and slippery surfaces making it a frustrating experience. It's not just the traffic or the heat that's the issue; it's the quality of the roads themselves.

On smaller bikes, the bad roads are more of an irritant than a dealbreaker. But for sports bikes, it's a different story altogether. With immense power and incredible brakes, they need firm suspension to deal with the forces involved. But in Mumbai, that means you're constantly being bounced around and getting kicked out of the seat.

The problem is exacerbated by the recent trend of building concrete roads. While they may last longer, they're also much rougher and less grippy than well-made tarmac roads. The seams between the concrete slabs create an excessively jarring experience, making it difficult to enjoy the power and handling of a sports bike.

I'll always love fast and sporty bikes, but for that to ever happen again, I'll have to live somewhere with good enough roads around me. Until then, I'll have to settle for capable ADVs and soul-stirring retro bikes.
