Tomato prices in Pune are rising due to weather-related disruptions and quality issues. Heavy rainfall has affected the supply and quality of tomatoes, leading to higher prices.
The current wholesale price of a 20kg crate of tomatoes in Pune is around ₹450–₹500. However, this is expected to double in the coming days.
Retail buyers are expected to see tomato prices jump from ₹40–₹50 per kilogram to ₹60–₹70 per kilogram. This volatility makes it difficult to plan kitchen budgets, and the quality of tomatoes is also declining despite higher prices.
Unseasonal showers in May destroyed nearly 70% of the tomato crop for some farmers. Even with rising prices, the losses incurred are significant and cannot be fully recovered.
While the quality of tomatoes is expected to improve as the rain intensity decreases, prices will continue to depend heavily on rainfall patterns. Any further weather disturbances could disrupt supply and push prices up.
