Tragic Death of Young CA: EY Pune Under Fire for Toxic Work Culture
Real Estate Pune:Anna Sebastian Perayil, a bright and ambitious Chartered Accountant from Kerala, had always been a high achiever. She had cleared the CA examination with distinction and was excited to start her career at EY India in Pune. However, her life was cut short just four months into her job, allegedly due to the extreme workload and toxic work culture at the company.

According to her mother, Anita Augustine, Anna started experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress soon after joining the company. Despite being a brilliant student, Anna found it challenging to cope with the unreasonable expectations of her seniors. She would often work late into the night, sacrificing her sleep and well-being to meet the demands of her job.

The situation took a turn for the worse when Anna started complaining of chest pain. Her parents took her to the hospital, where the cardiologist attributed her condition to the lack of sleep and irregular eating habits. However, Anna was determined to excel at work and continued to push herself, even working on her convocation day.

Tragically, Anna's health continued to deteriorate, and she passed away on July 6, 2024. What's even more shocking is that no one from EY attended her funeral, and the company officials did not even bother to reach out to her family.

EY has since issued a statement expressing its condolences and stating that it will continue to find ways to improve and provide a healthy workplace. However, the company's response has been met with skepticism by many, who feel that it is too little, too late.

The incident has raised concerns about the work culture at EY Pune and the impact it can have on the mental and physical health of its employees. It has also sparked a debate about the need for companies to prioritize their employees' well-being and provide a supportive work environment.

In the letter, Anita Augustine wrote, 'Burdening newcomers with such backbreaking work, making them work day and night even on Sundays has no justification whatsoever...the management took full advantage of the fact that she was new and overwhelmed her with both assigned and unassigned work.' She also alleged that the company's relentless demands and pressure to meet unrealistic expectations are not sustainable and cost the life of a young woman with so much potential.

While EY has stated that it has provided all the assistance it can in such times of distress, the company's actions will be closely watched by many who are demanding change.

About EY EY is a global professional services firm that provides assurance, tax, transaction, and advisory services. The company has over 1,00,000 employees across its member firms in India and is committed to providing a healthy workplace for its employees.
