Vegetable Cultivation in Decline: Sangareddy's Real Estate Boom to Blame
Real Estate Maharashtra:Vegetable cultivation in Sangareddy, Telangana, has been experiencing a significant decline in recent years. The area under vegetable cultivation in the district has reduced drastically from 40,000 acres in 2016 to a mere 7,305 acres in 2023-24. This sharp drop is attributed to the rapid spread of real estate ventures and the lack of support from the State government.

The decline in vegetable cultivation has led to a surge in vegetable prices, forcing the State to depend on imports from neighboring states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Earlier, the State government used to extend subsidies on various agricultural inputs, including drip systems, mulching, seeds, and more. However, when the government stopped providing these subsidies, the investment burden on farmers increased manifold, leading many to stop cultivating vegetable crops.

Moreover, the fast-expanding real estate industry is also taking a toll on vegetable cultivation. Farmers in areas such as Gummadidala, Jinnaram, Hathnoora, Patancheru, and Sangareddy, who were once engaged in vegetable cultivation, are now giving up due to the increasing investment burden. These areas were once ideal for vegetable cultivation due to their proximity to Hyderabad. However, real estate companies have bought a significant portion of the land, leading to the development of multiple ventures.

Farmers are demanding that the government reintroduce subsidies to support vegetable farmers. The increasing prices of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs are making it difficult for farmers to continue cultivation. The State government's current subsidy scheme, which provides Rs 1 lakh per acre for pandal cultivation, is limited to only 15 acres in Sangareddy district, which is insufficient to meet the demand.

The area under vegetable cultivation in Sangareddy has been consistently declining over the years, from 17,764 acres in 2019-20 to 7,305 acres in 2023-24. This decline is a cause for concern and requires immediate attention from the State government to support vegetable farmers and ensure food security.
