Aaditya Thackeray Urges CM Fadnavis for Relief and Redevelopment of Old Mumbai Buildings
Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray has penned a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging immediate relief for residents of old buildings in Mumbai before the onset of the monsoon.
In his letter, Thackeray emphasized the long-standing issue of redeveloping old cess buildings that operate under the pagdi system. He highlighted that redevelopment provisions under Rules 79-A(1)(a) and 79-A(1)(b) were introduced during the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. However, the matter has been pending in court for the past two years, affecting nearly 14,000 buildings and thousands of residents across Mumbai.
Thackeray posted the letter on his X account, reminding the Chief Minister of the urgency to release funds for the repair and redevelopment of these buildings. He wrote, 'Urging that funds be made immediately available before the upcoming monsoon season for the repair and maintenance of these buildings under the Chief Minister's special powers.'
He expressed hope that both the state and central governments would work together to provide justice and protection to tenants living in aging structures across Mumbai.
In his letter, Thackeray outlined four key demands to the Maharashtra government: - Conduct a special drive to properly register all tenants. - Protect tenants from alleged harassment and eviction by landlords. - Provide urgent repair and maintenance funds before the monsoon for cess and non-cess buildings requiring structural repairs. - Personally intervene in the pending court matter to ensure justice for affected residents.
Thackeray also noted that similar issues faced by tenants in cess buildings in south Mumbai were affecting residents of non-cess buildings in suburban areas. He requested that emergency financial assistance be provided through the Chief Minister's special powers before the arrival of the monsoon season.
According to him, many old and damaged buildings urgently require repairs and maintenance to ensure the safety of residents during heavy rains. Thackeray's letter underscores the pressing need for the government to address these issues promptly to prevent potential disasters and ensure the well-being of Mumbai's residents.
