The land, located in the prime real estate area of Mumbai’s Colaba, is being leased for a period of 60 years.

Addressing a press conference, Sonowal stated that this initiative is a significant step towards developing essential public infrastructure that will directly benefit the citizens of Assam. The land is strategically situated in the heart of Mumbai, one of India's most important financial hubs, and will serve a variety of needs for the people of Assam.

The decision to allocate this land follows a request from the Assam Chief Secretary to the Union Ministry. The request was made to seek a dedicated center or infrastructure project that could cater to the long-term needs of the people of Assam. Sonowal emphasized that this is a people-first initiative, designed to meet the aspirations of the citizens of Assam.

“This project will be developed in line with the needs and aspirations of the people of Assam. Located at the heart of Mumbai, this will plug a big aspiration of the people of Assam to have access in Mumbai city that can serve the needs of people — be it patients, students, or even entrepreneurs,” Sonowal said.

While the specific plans for development are still under consideration, officials have indicated that the focus will be on building infrastructure with high public utility. This includes healthcare and educational facilities, welfare and social service centers, and even an incubation center for entrepreneurs. The 60-year lease ensures that the government has ample time and flexibility to plan and execute sustainable projects.

Mumbai is known as the financial capital of India, and with the development of this land parcel, the government is confident that entrepreneurs from Assam will have better access to the opportunities available in the city. “Mumbai is a financial hub. With the development of this land parcel, we are confident that the entrepreneurs from the state can also have access to the opportunities from the maximum city,” Sonowal added.
