Bachchu Kadu Warns Government Over Delayed Disability Pensions in Maharashtra
Bachchu Kadu, who was recently elected as a member of the Legislative Council (MLC) following his entry into the Shiv Sena (Shinde), has returned to his activist roots by issuing a direct ultimatum to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The issue at hand is the long-delayed pensions for the disabled in Maharashtra, which has left thousands of visually impaired and disabled citizens facing severe financial distress.
Under the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana, eligible persons with over 40 per cent disability are entitled to a monthly stipend of Rs 2,500. However, payments for February, March, and April have reportedly not been released, leaving many without money for basic necessities like rent, electricity, and medicines.
Disturbed by reports of blind citizens protesting at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, Kadu slammed the government’s priorities. Protesters and Kadu alike questioned how the state has ample funds for the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme but lacks the budget to pay the rightful dues of the disabled.
He criticized the government’s decision to halt pensions for those awaiting their UDID (Unique Disability ID) cards, calling the rule 'cruel and unnecessary'. Kadu warned that if the government does not resolve the issue immediately, he will lead a massive protest at the Mantralaya (State Secretariat) on May 19.
The situation has escalated to a point where the disabled community feels neglected and marginalized. Many of them are struggling to make ends meet, and the delay in pension payments has added to their woes. Kadu’s intervention is seen as a ray of hope, as he has a history of championing the rights of marginalized communities.
The government’s response to this crisis is crucial. While the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme, aimed at empowering women, is a commendable initiative, it should not come at the cost of neglecting other vulnerable groups. The state must ensure that all welfare schemes are implemented effectively and that no section of society is left behind.
Kadu’s ultimatum has put the government under pressure to act swiftly. The Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Minister are expected to address the issue and provide a resolution to avoid further protests and public unrest. The coming days will be crucial in determining the government’s commitment to the welfare of the disabled community in Maharashtra.
