BMC Elections 2026: BJP-led Mahayuti Alliance Triumphs in Mumbai's Civic Battle

The State Election Commission announced around midnight that results for all 227 wards of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had been declared, sealing a historic victory for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in Mumbai’s high-stakes civic battle.

The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while ally Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) secured 29 seats. Together, the alliance crossed the crucial majority mark in India’s richest civic body. The Shiv Sena (UBT) won 65 seats, MNS managed six, and the Congress, contesting in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, bagged 24 seats.

Among other parties, AIMIM won eight seats, NCP three, Samajwadi Party two, and NCP (SP) was reduced to just one seat.

Addressing jubilant party workers in south Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is set to come to power in 25 of the 29 municipal corporations where polls were held on January 15.

Across the state, results for 2,833 of the 2,868 seats in the 29 civic bodies were declared by midnight. The State Election Commission did not issue an official update on the remaining 35 seats.

Statewide numbers underlined the scale of the saffron surge. The BJP won 1,400 seats, while ally Shiv Sena bagged 397. The Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 153 seats, MNS 13, and the Congress finished with 324 seats.

In Mumbai, the BJP-led alliance bagged 118 seats, comfortably surpassing the 114-seat majority mark in the 227-member BMC. The civic body, considered the financial nerve center of the city, commands a massive budget of Rs 74,427 crore for 2025–26.
