The Maharashtra State Board of Wakf is investigating the ownership of a plot in Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai, sold to the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) in 2016.
The dispute is over the status of the plot as a Wakf property, with some tenants and their supporters arguing that it is Wakf land and should not have been sold to SBUT.
The Wakf Act of 1995 is a law that regulates the management and administration of Wakf properties in India. According to the Act, no property registered with the Wakf Board can be sold.
SBUT aims to provide cleaner and more organized living spaces for residents of Bhendi Bazaar, in line with the vision of the former spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohras, the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin.
The Wakf Board has already begun its investigation, with two hearings having taken place. The findings will soon be presented to the Wakf Board for a final decision.
