Blue Prince: A Unique Blend of Puzzles and Rogue-Like Mechanics
Real Estate Mumbai:Blue Prince has a seemingly generic premise: a wealthy relative has died and left their entire estate to you. However, you must find a way to the 46th room in the mansion. This seems like a doable challenge until you find out that you need to build the mansion as you move through the building. You are assigned three rooms to choose from, and each room has certain traits or significance to solving all the mysteries of the game. You also have a limited number of steps in a day, and most rooms in the estate will require some steps to navigate through them. Once you run out of steps, the game moves on to the next day, where you have to, again, from scratch, build the rooms in the entire mansion.

What is fun, though, is the little clues and the stuff you unlock along the way as you try to find this mythical path through the rooms. The game also requires you to take your own notes, and there are a bunch of side quests and puzzles to solve, other than the main one. It’s a whole lot of confusing bits until they start to make sense, and often that ‘ah-ha’ moment takes a little while and a lot of exploration. When it does happen, though, it can be deeply satisfying.

There are several room types in this game; some are just hallways and rooms you pass through, some have important clues, and some have treasures and secrets to discover. The rooms pop up randomly; some factors influence which ones pop up, but it takes a while to notice this. While there is always one free room, some of the more interesting rooms may cost gems or may be hidden behind a door that requires a key, so make sure you look out for keys and gems. The key here is to get rooms that have the most doors and then use them to open up possibilities.

Since some rooms are unlocked and reappear more frequently as you play the game, it is almost impossible to finish Blue Prince in the first round. It took me a good 20 hours to reach room 46, including some time spent solving some side quests. There are several times, especially towards the end, where you get the worst selection of rooms, and your play through ends in frustration. This is the nature of rogue-like games, and while in the moment you feel defeated, the feeling of solving the maze is even more satisfying.

The game has a cartoony, sombre look to it, and it isn’t my favourite. I feel it doesn’t suit the game. However, the game is well-crafted and features a painstaking amount of detail, which I appreciate. The controls for the game are pretty straightforward: the usual movement controls and an interaction control, making it easy to use. You can also run, but barely. It is a very simple game to play, but as mentioned, you might want to keep notes about the various rooms you encounter and try to get related rooms through future runs.

Initially, when I read the description for this game on Steam, I was very confused and not entirely convinced that something like this could work. However, Blue Prince has proven me wrong. This unique blend of genres has worked in its favour to create a game that is equal parts frustrating and entertaining. Considering this is Dogubomb’s first game, it is truly remarkable. Having sunk a few weeks into this puzzler, I can totally recommend it to anyone who likes to solve mysteries and isn’t afraid of making a few notes along the way. So, if you want a challenge, get Blue Prince. It is worth the asking price of Rs 1300 on Steam.
