The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is an ambitious initiative undertaken by the state government in collaboration with the Adani group. It aims to transform the slums in Dharavi, one of the largest slums in Mumbai, into high-rise buildings to provide housing to eligible slum dwellers and generate revenue through the sale of flats.
The BMC is responsible for executing 64 slum redevelopment projects out of the 228 projects announced by the state government for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The contractors appointed for the slum redevelopment projects will handle all responsibilities, including the survey of slums, planning and preparation of the project, securing permissions and no-objection certificates, construction of tenements, and their maintenance post-construction.
The potential benefits of these slum redevelopment projects include providing housing to eligible slum dwellers, generating revenue through the sale of flats, and creating amenities such as open spaces and parking lots.
Critics, such as Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Rais Shaikh, argue that the BMC lacks the experience to successfully execute slum rehabilitation projects and that these projects focus on specific-area development rather than cluster development. They also point out the BMC's past failures in redeveloping its own schools.
