CBI Arrests 5 in Wadala Land NOC Bribe Case; Pune Link Probed

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested five persons, including a Central Public Works Department (CPWD) engineer, in an alleged bribery case linked to the issuance of a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for a land parcel in Wadala, Mumbai. The accused engineer allegedly demanded around Rs 70 lakh from a real estate group for a construction project.
The bribe was allegedly routed through the engineer's relative, who is a resident of Pune. This has brought the spotlight on how land NOCs and government clearances are processed for real estate projects across Maharashtra.
What the case means
The case highlights the importance of transparent approval mechanisms in real estate. For property buyers, projects with clear land titles and all necessary NOCs are safer. Any dispute over NOCs can delay project timelines and affect pricing.
Impact on Maharashtra real estate
Authorities are expected to tighten scrutiny of NOC applications, especially for government land and redevelopment projects. In the short term, some projects may face delays as agencies review compliance. Buyers and investors should verify the legal status of land, approvals, and RERA registration before making any investment.
