OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) technology combines power line protection with high-capacity fibre optic communication. It allows cables to carry both electricity and high-speed internet signals, improving mobile connectivity and reliability.
The pilot project for OPGW was inaugurated at Asangaon in Thane district by CR General Manager Dharam Veer Meena.
OPGW will improve mobile connectivity, making calls and data transmission smoother. It will also enhance the reliability of railway communication, support advanced safety features like the Kavach system, and improve the overall commuting experience.
The Kavach system, also known as Automatic Train Protection (ATP), is an advanced safety feature designed to prevent train accidents by providing automatic protection and improving communication between trains and railway staff.
If the pilot project at Asangaon is successful, OPGW technology will be rolled out across the entire Central Railway network to bring significant improvements in connectivity and service quality.
