The controversy surrounds the expansion of the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) onto the DSE campus lawns, which has sparked concerns among alumni, professors, and students about the erosion of open spaces and the character of the DSE campus.
Partha Sen is the former director of the DSE. He declined to join the celebrations because of the recent construction activities on the premises, which he believes are compromising the open spaces and academic freedom of the institution.
The LT lawns are an important part of the university commons and provide a safe and welcoming space for students and teachers from all departments and colleges.
The petition was signed by 248 people, including 56 current and former faculty members, 29 research scholars, and 163 postgraduate students of DSE, as well as prominent economists and academics such as Jean Dreze and Santosh Panda.
The construction is expected to erode the open spaces and compromise the safety and accessibility of the campus, as well as undermine the academic freedom and character of the institution.
