Diwali Surprise: Mumbaikars Can Now Register Documents at Any Stamp Office
Real Estate Mumbai:In a welcome Diwali gift for Mumbaikars, the Maharashtra Revenue Department has removed the long-standing area restriction for document registration. Citizens, business owners, and professionals across Mumbai and its suburbs can now register or adjudicate their property agreements, rent deeds, inheritance papers, and other documents at any of the six stamp offices in the city.

Until now, residents were allowed to register their documents only at the stamp office located within their specific area. This often led to delays, long queues, and unnecessary travel across the city. With the new rule, people can now choose the office most convenient to them — whether it’s in Borivali, Kurla, Andheri, Mumbai City, or the Principal Stamp Office near the Old Custom House, which houses Enforcement Offices 1 and 2.

The decision was announced by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who said the move aims to make the registration process simpler and faster for everyone. “This reform will save time and reduce the hassle for citizens. It will also improve efficiency in government offices,” he stated.

The department has already issued a government gazette notification to formalize the change. Officials say the new system will come into effect immediately, marking a major step toward citizen-friendly governance.

For many Mumbai residents, the change brings a sense of relief. Lawyers, real estate agents, and business owners often faced scheduling difficulties due to the area-wise system. “Earlier, we had to travel across the city just to get a document adjudicated in the right office. Now, this flexibility will help us and our clients save time,” said a property consultant from Andheri.

The move is expected to significantly reduce crowding at specific offices and distribute the workload evenly across all six locations. Citizens can now plan their visits based on convenience rather than compulsion, especially during the festive season when property transactions are at their peak.

By ending the area-based restriction, the government hopes to make public services more accessible and transparent. For a city like Mumbai, where every minute counts, this change promises smoother paperwork, faster service, and fewer hurdles — a genuine festive gift from the state administration.
