Justice Served: Kanpur Jeweler Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Brutal Murder of Mira Road Woman
Real Estate Mumbai:Mumbai, India - In a significant verdict, the district and sessions court in Thane has convicted and sentenced a Kanpur-based jeweller to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a 60-year-old woman in Mira Road, Mumbai, in 2018.

The incident dates back to November 5, 2018, when the deceased woman, Rita Rony Rodrigues, was found dead in a pool of blood in her sixth-floor apartment in Samruddhi Building, Poonam Garden area of Mira Road (east). Rodrigues, a real estate agent, had sustained 12 stab wounds on her throat and stomach, inflicted with a sharp-edged weapon.

The local crime branch unit of the erstwhile Thane (rural) police arrested Sanjay Rameshchandra Verma alias Sonu, then aged 34, for his involvement in the murder and robbery of gold ornaments that the deceased woman was wearing. Investigations revealed that Verma, a former resident of Samruddhi building, had committed the crime to take revenge for the alleged humiliation caused to him by the woman when she refused to lend him her car to ferry his wife to the hospital.

The investigating team, led by senior police inspector Vasant Labdhe, filed a watertight charge sheet supported by cogent and credible evidence against the accused, who had shifted to Kanpur to handle his family's gold ornament store.

Apart from life imprisonment for murder, the court also awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty for the offence under section 397 of the IPC. The convict has also been fined Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 50,000 for both crimes, failing which he will have to spend more rigorous time in jail. Both sentences will be served concurrently.

The city of Mumbai is known for its fast-paced life, but it is not immune to crimes. The Mira Road area, where the incident took place, is a bustling suburb with a mix of residential and commercial areas. The Samruddhi Building, where the victim lived, is a residential complex with several apartments.

The Thane district and sessions court is a premier institution in the state of Maharashtra, known for its judicious verdicts and commitment to justice.
