Maharashtra CM Directs Authorities to Create Robust System for Affordable Rental Housing in Mumbai
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the setting up of an effective mechanism for affordable rental housing in Mumbai, besides developing a dedicated portal to facilitate access for citizens. This initiative aims to address the significant demand for housing in the city, which sees a large number of people migrating for jobs and businesses.
Noting that a large number of people migrate to Mumbai for jobs and businesses, Fadnavis stressed that there is a significant demand for housing, and the government must ensure the availability of rental homes at affordable rates. He emphasized that the supply should match the demand and that a coordinated system should be put in place so that both landlords and tenants do not face difficulties.
According to the CM, all procedures related to rental housing should be carried out strictly as per agreements and with proper oversight by the authorities. This will help in maintaining transparency and fairness in the rental market.
On strengthening the implementation of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999, Fadnavis directed that deputy commissioners of police be designated as competent authorities under the Act. A notification should be issued to include these responsibilities in their official duties and ensure that the number of such authorities increases in line with the expansion of police jurisdictions.
To speed up the disposal of rent-related disputes, Fadnavis called for the setting up of 100 special courts and the appointment of retired judges for the purpose. He also suggested starting evening courts, with the court's permission, to clear long-pending cases, even if premises need to be hired.
The initiative is expected to provide a seamless and efficient system for managing rental housing in Mumbai, thereby improving the quality of life for residents and ensuring that the city continues to attract and retain talent and businesses.
