Maharashtra Government Revamps Worli Jetty with Helipad and Water Transport
The Maharashtra government is moving ahead with redevelopment plans for the Worli jetty in Mumbai, integrating proposals for a helipad, passenger water transport infrastructure, and emergency services facilities at the Coastal Road site.
The initiative is being coordinated between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), and state government departments as authorities evaluate long-term public use of the temporary jetties constructed during the Mumbai Coastal Road project.
According to reports, Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane recently reviewed the project during a meeting attended by senior officials from MMB, BMC, and associated departments. The government stated that the redevelopment plan is intended to strengthen water transport connectivity, emergency medical infrastructure, and coastal mobility services in Mumbai.
The Worli jetty was originally developed to facilitate transportation of construction materials during the execution of the Mumbai Coastal Road project. With major construction activity nearing completion, the state government is assessing ways to repurpose the infrastructure for public and transport-related use instead of dismantling the structures.
Officials stated that the proposed redevelopment framework includes passenger water transport services, water ambulances, emergency response systems, and public transport integration. The government is also pursuing plans for a helipad facility at the site for medical evacuation, disaster management, and coastal surveillance purposes.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had earlier initiated the process for developing the helipad under a public-private partnership model and selected Raymond as the private partner for the project. Civic officials stated that the helipad proposal would require aviation-related approvals, environmental clearances, and structural modifications before becoming operational.
As part of the redevelopment process, the Maharashtra Maritime Board commissioned the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to conduct a structural audit of the Worli jetty. According to the audit findings cited by officials, the existing structure was found suitable for passenger and transport-related activities, although sections near the Worli Dairy area may require reinforcement for emergency medical operations and larger infrastructure use.
Officials stated that MMB has already initiated the process for the appointment of a project management consultant to prepare a pre-feasibility report, detailed project report, and environmental clearances linked to the redevelopment exercise. Technical approvals and tendering activities are expected to be undertaken in phases after completion of planning assessments.
The Worli jetty redevelopment forms part of broader efforts by the Maharashtra government to expand coastal mobility infrastructure and strengthen water-based transport systems across Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
