Maharashtra Govt Takes Possession of Iconic Air India Building at Nariman Point
The Maharashtra government has formally taken possession of the iconic Air India building at Nariman Point in Mumbai, marking a significant step in strengthening the state's administrative infrastructure. The property was acquired from Air India Assets Holding Limited (AIAHL) for Rs 1,601 crore. The handover took place nearly two-and-a-half years after the state cabinet approved the purchase in September 2023.
Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale inspected the building on Wednesday following the official transfer. The Air India building is expected to provide modern office space for several state government departments. Officials believe the move will help improve administrative efficiency by bringing various departments under one roof and offering better facilities for both government employees and citizens.
During his visit, Bhosale said the building would be developed into a model government complex focused on quality infrastructure, long-term durability, and public convenience. He instructed officials to ensure that all renovation and repair work is carried out to the highest standards before government offices are shifted to the premises.
A detailed structural audit of the building will be conducted to assess its condition and identify any repair requirements. According to an official statement, all necessary repairs must be completed before the building becomes operational for government use. Bhosale emphasised that the renovation process should focus on durability and quality, ensuring the property remains functional for many years.
The minister also instructed officials to use high-quality materials for electrical systems, fittings, and other technical infrastructure within the building. He stressed that no compromises should be made when it comes to safety, efficiency, and long-term maintenance. Bhosale suggested redesigning the building's main entrance so that it better reflects Maharashtra's stature and identity. He recommended seeking advice from leading architects and expert institutions to create a design that is both functional and visually appealing.
The minister said the needs of citizens travelling to Mumbai from different parts of Maharashtra for official work should remain a key consideration throughout the project. He directed officials to ensure the redevelopment is completed within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining high standards of quality and public service. The transformation of the former Air India headquarters is expected to create a modern administrative hub and strengthen the state's governance infrastructure.
