Maharashtra Launches Floating Solar Projects on Reservoirs to Boost Green Energy
Pune, 24th January 2026: In a significant move to bolster energy security and promote renewable power, the Maharashtra government has announced plans to set up floating solar power projects on the reservoirs of dams managed by the Krishna and Godavari River Development Corporations. This initiative was highlighted during a two-day “Green Energy Utilisation” workshop organized by the Water Resources Department, which was attended by Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, senior departmental officials, entrepreneurs, energy experts, and representatives of partner organizations.
Speaking at the event, Vikhe-Patil emphasized that the floating solar projects would position Maharashtra as a leader in the green energy sector. He also mentioned that discussions are underway to grant greater autonomy to the Krishna Valley Development Corporation, with a decision expected soon.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the government is exploring innovative ways to use existing irrigation infrastructure for power generation to meet the state’s growing energy demand. According to Vikhe-Patil, floating solar projects will not require land acquisition, thereby preserving agricultural land. Additionally, installing solar panels on water reservoirs is expected to reduce evaporation, aiding water conservation and directly benefiting farmers and rural communities.
The workshop delved into the technical standards necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of floating solar projects. Officials stressed the importance of a transparent public-private partnership (PPP) model to attract international investment. The Water Resources Department will serve as the nodal agency for implementing these projects on reservoirs under its control.
Authorities are confident that the initiative will not only make Maharashtra energy self-reliant but also serve as a model for tackling climate change challenges. The state’s commitment to green energy is expected to attract significant investment and create numerous job opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
