Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar directed all government departments and implementing agencies to ensure 100 per cent utilisation of allocated funds during a meeting of the Mumbai suburban district planning committee at Chetana College in Bandra.

The Maharashtra minister laid out a clear and ambitious roadmap for the region’s development. “All issues raised by elected representatives reflect the concerns of the people. It is our responsibility to act on them swiftly,” said Shelar, who also holds the portfolios of Cultural Affairs and Information Technology.

A key point of discussion was the urgent need for full utilisation of funds under tribal development schemes. Shelar also called for a tribal population census to improve targeted planning and ensure delivery of civic amenities to tribal hamlets.

In the meeting, it was decided that the government has launched a monthly rent assistance scheme of Rs 20,000 for residents of old and unsafe buildings undergoing redevelopment. This step aims to support families during the transition and speed up redevelopment projects. To safeguard landslide-prone areas, mass nets will be installed.

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will handle areas where wall height is below 9 metres, while taller structures will fall under the Public Works Department.

Approval of Key Projects:
- A total budget of Rs 1,088 crore was sanctioned.
- A new Force One training centre at Kalina was approved.
- All departments were instructed to submit clear and timely compliance reports.

The committee unanimously passed a resolution by MLA Pravin Darekar to exclude Ketkipada and nearby settlements from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park buffer zone. This move could pave the way for the in-situ rehabilitation of over 80,000 residents lacking basic amenities.

Other critical issues were also discussed in the meeting, and the committee members raised serious concerns including rising drug abuse in suburban areas, women safety, bridge and footpath construction, road repairs, nullah cleaning, and services for forest land dwellers. Officials from BMC, Police, SRA, and other departments were instructed to treat these issues with urgency and provide written updates before the next meeting.
