Mumbai Air Quality Deteriorates: BMC Implements GRAP-IV Measures, Halts Construction
Real Estate Mumbai:Mumbai's air quality has been deteriorating over the last few days, leading the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to announce strict measures to control the worsening situation.
On December 30, the BMC declared that construction activities would be halted in areas where the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches or exceeds 200, which is considered a poor category.

Mumbai has been grappling with poor air quality, and the BMC has taken immediate action to mitigate the issue.
The civic body chief, Bhushan Gagrani, informed reporters that all private and public construction work has been suspended in the Borivali East and Byculla areas of Mumbai, where the AQI has consistently breached the 200 mark.

Gagrani stated, “In all the areas of Mumbai where the AQI index surpasses the 200 mark, we will be stopping work at all construction sites under the GRAP-IV norms.
Once the AQI breaches 200, the rule will be implemented immediately without issuing any stop-work notices to the developers.”

What are GRAP-IV Measures?

GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan) measures are part of the winter air pollution control plan.
These measures are implemented when the air quality worsens to the 'severe' category due to adverse weather conditions.
Stage 4 of the GRAP plan includes a complete ban on construction activities.
This is similar to the measures taken in Delhi earlier this month when the air quality there also deteriorated to severe levels.

BMC's Actions

The BMC has been proactive in enforcing these measures.
In a statement on December 30, the corporation revealed that it has inspected 877 construction projects and issued 'Stop Work Notices' at about 286 locations so far.
This process will continue to ensure compliance and improve air quality.

Citizens can also play a crucial role by reporting any violations through the 'Mumbai Air App.' The BMC has received 412 complaints via this app, of which 350 have been resolved.
Additionally, the corporation has taken legal action against 352 incidents of open burning of garbage, which have been documented from November 4, 2023, to December 10, 2024.

Information on BMC

Conclusion

The BMC's swift action to implement GRAP-IV measures and halt construction activities in areas with poor air quality is a significant step towards improving the overall air quality in Mumbai.
Continued efforts and public participation are essential to ensure the effectiveness of these measures and to create a healthier environment for the city's residents.
