Commuters are protesting because they believe the additional Rs 5 charge for storing helmets at Western Railway’s parking lots in Mumbai is a deterrent to helmet usage and could lead to increased accidents and injuries.
The issue was highlighted by Adv. Prathamesh Prabhutendolkar, Joint Secretary of Dahanu Vaitarna Pravasi Sevabhavi Sanstha, in a letter to the Railway Board, the Minister of Railways, and the Minister of Road Transport and Highways.
According to a senior official from Western Railway, the helmet storage charge is in accordance with the rules and regulations, and the contractor is responsible for handling and safeguarding the helmets, justifying the nominal fee for this service.
Commuters are concerned that the additional charge for storing helmets could discourage people from wearing them, potentially leading to increased accidents and injuries, and they argue that helmets are essential safety gear and should not be subject to extra charges.
