The ED arrested former Vasai-Virar City Municipal Commissioner Anil Pawar, suspended Deputy Director of Town Planning Y.S. Reddy, builder Sitaram Gupta, and his nephew Arun Gupta.
The case involves the illegal construction of forty-one buildings on sixty acres of government and private land in Nalasopara, which was reserved for public utilities.
The ED uncovered the collusion through a network of shell companies and bogus certificates, which were used to convert public land into private real estate.
The PMLA Court is significant as it deals with cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, which the accused are being charged under for their involvement in the illegal construction and money laundering activities.
The ED is working closely with other law enforcement bodies to ensure that all those involved in the illegal activities are held accountable. Additionally, there is a push for stronger oversight and transparency in the real estate sector, particularly regarding the use of public land.
