Residents of the top 18 floors of Willingdon View CHS in Tardeo, Mumbai, had to vacate their flats because the building lacks an occupancy certificate (OC) for those floors, and a high court order mandated their evacuation by August 27.
The BMC is responsible for verifying whether the flats have been vacated and locked, as claimed by the residents. They also maintained a firm stance, warning that they would seal the flats with police protection if the court order was not followed.
Cabinet minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha sought an intervention from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who directed the BMC to issue the long-pending OC, stating that the residents had been deceived by the builder and should not be punished for it.
Buildings in Mumbai without an OC face higher taxes, inflated water bills, and restrictions on property transactions. They may also not be formally recognised in municipal or fire department records, leaving residents vulnerable in emergencies.
Residents are either relocating to lodges or returning to their hometowns. Some are staying with relatives or friends temporarily. They are also demanding the swift issuance of the full OC from the BMC to resolve their legal and financial issues.
