The Mumbai Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken strict action against app-based cab drivers who charged exorbitant fares during recent heavy rainfall. A total of 147 drivers were booked for overcharging passengers, with some fares reaching up to four times the normal rate.

The RTO conducted a special drive and booked approximately 147 app-based taxi services for charging excessive fares during heavy rainfall. Of these, 36 services were specifically noted for charging unreasonable fares.
State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik directed the motor transport department to take strict action against app-based cab companies engaged in financial exploitation.
Some passengers reported being charged fares that were nearly two to four times the normal rate. For example, a normal fare of Rs 200 was charged as Rs 600-800 and upwards.
The transport commissioner has been instructed to deploy officials to take action on the ground. The transport chief has also been asked to consider canceling the licenses of app-based taxis that exploit passengers, if necessary.
Passengers can report instances of overcharging to the RTO or the police cyber cell to help maintain transparency and fairness in the transportation sector.
