Mumbai Slum Rehab: Dharavi & MHADA Affordable Housing

By GeoSquare News Desk · Published 2026-11-05

Mumbai's slum rehabilitation sector is seeing renewed momentum with the final approval of the Dharavi redevelopment project and a new MHADA lottery for affordable housing. These initiatives are set to reshape the city's affordable housing landscape.

Dharavi Redevelopment

The Dharavi redevelopment project has received final approvals, with a private developer set to build 7,000 affordable homes in the first phase. This marks a significant step towards transforming Asia's largest slum into a planned township, offering improved living conditions and infrastructure.

MHADA Lottery

In parallel, MHADA has launched an online lottery for 5,000 affordable units across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Prices start at ₹15 lakh, making homeownership accessible to a wider segment of buyers. The lottery process is transparent and aims to streamline allocation.

These initiatives are expected to ease the housing shortage in Mumbai and attract investment in the affordable segment. For investors, this signals a growing opportunity in the mid and low-income housing market, with potential for steady returns as demand remains high.
