Mumbai: Smog Blankets the City as Air Quality Deteriorates, AQI Reaches 137
Real Estate Mumbai:Mumbai, this morning, woke up to layers of thick smog enveloping several areas, as the air quality in the city plummeted further, just a few days ahead of Diwali. The Air Quality Index (AQI) today touched 137 at 5 08 am, indicating a significant decline in air quality, according to data from aqi.in.

A video posted by news agency ANI on microblogging site X displays the worsening situation of air pollution in the city. The visuals around Marine Drive this morning clearly show the layer of smog lingering in the air.

Mumbai's air quality has declined to unsatisfactory levels for the third time this month due to increased humidity and reduced wind speed. On Friday, the city's average AQI reached 131, with Navy Nagar in Colaba experiencing hazardous levels at 312, triggering health alerts for residents with respiratory issues. Other areas, including Byculla, Mazgaon, and Worli, recorded very unhealthy AQI levels.

Following the southwest monsoon's retreat on October 15, smog, warmer temperatures, and low wind speeds have contributed to poor air quality. However, experts predict improvement as temperatures drop and wind speeds increase in the coming days.

After a period of above-normal temperatures and high humidity earlier this week, a noticeable drop in temperature began on Saturday due to a shift to northerly winds. This shift is expected to alleviate the discomfort caused by the previous easterly winds that carried significant moisture.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts mainly clear skies for the city, with no weather alerts. Today's maximum temperature is expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 22 degrees Celsius and relative humidity between 55 percent and 85 percent.

For the week ahead, Mumbai is predicted to have clear skies with maximum temperatures ranging from 31 to 33 degrees Celsius and minimums between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius from October 27 to 30. On October 31 and November 1, the city may experience partly cloudy skies with maximum temperatures between 31 and 32 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, especially those with respiratory issues, and stay indoors if possible.
