The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is a government agency in Mumbai, India, established in 1996 to provide housing and improve living conditions for slum dwellers. It aims to rehabilitate slum areas and provide housing for the underprivileged.
The SRA has set a target to deliver over 500,000 new homes to slum dwellers in the next five years, which is more than double the total number of homes built in the 29 years since its inception.
The SRA has introduced several reforms, including the use of drone and biometric surveys, an e-office system, and policies to empower architects and consultants. These reforms aim to fast-track projects and ensure timely rent for slum dwellers.
The SRA can recover unpaid rent from a builder's assets or the personal property of its directors/partners if the company lacks sufficient assets. Outstanding rent will be treated as arrears of land revenue, allowing the SRA to attach and sell a builder's property to pay slum dwellers.
Around 50% of Mumbai's residents live in 2,397 slum clusters, highlighting the significant housing crisis in the city.
