The BDD chawl redevelopment project in Mumbai is a major public housing initiative aimed at rehousing nearly 15,600 families from century-old chawls into modern, spacious, and sustainable apartments. The project is valued at over Rs 17,000 crore and involves the construction of new 40-storey towers.
So far, 556 families from the BDD chawls in Worli have received keys to their new 500-sq ft apartments. These families were previously living in cramped 160-sq ft rooms.
The new complexes include schools, hospitals, gyms, hostels, and commercial hubs. They also incorporate sustainability features such as sewage treatment plants, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting systems.
The project includes the preservation of one original chawl as a museum. Public landmarks such as Jamboree Maidan and Ambedkar Maidan will also remain untouched, ensuring the cultural heritage of the area is maintained.
Eligible families awaiting possession of their new homes are receiving a monthly rent allowance of Rs 25,000. The housing authority has also pledged to maintain the redeveloped towers for 12 years to ensure long-term quality.
