The Vande Bharat depot at Ram Mandir is significant as it marks Mumbai's transformation into a high-speed rail hub, supporting the maintenance and expansion of India’s fastest-growing fleet of semi-high-speed trains. It will house up to 50 Vande Bharat and Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, promoting greener and more sustainable public transport.
The new Vande Bharat depot is being constructed on a six-acre site between Jogeshwari and Ram Mandir stations in Mumbai. The location is strategic due to its proximity to the Western Express Highway and the upcoming Jogeshwari Terminus.
The Jogeshwari Terminus is a ₹77 crore greenfield project with three platforms capable of handling 24-coach trains and integrated parking for last-mile connectivity. It aims to accommodate at least 24 long-distance trains daily, many of which could be Vande Bharat variants.
The Vande Bharat depot contributes to urban transformation by reclaiming and repurposing neglected infrastructure for future-ready transit. It supports India’s climate commitments and reduces dependency on short-haul flights, making overnight routes like Mumbai to Delhi or Indore viable rail alternatives.
Challenges in implementing the Vande Bharat project in Mumbai include setbacks in the sixth line between Kandivali and Borivali due to encroachments and utility relocation. However, officials expect its completion by December, and work is also underway on the Virar–Dahanu corridor and development at Palghar.
