Mumbai's Future: 59-Minute City-Wide Travel by 2029
Real Estate Mumbai:Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Mumbai’s transport infrastructure will be fully integrated by 2029, enabling city-wide travel in just 59 minutes, as reported by The Times of India. This ambitious project aims to transform Mumbai into a more efficient and globally competitive city.

Speaking at a real estate conclave on Thursday (18 October), Fadnavis revealed that the establishment of a war room has allowed all agencies in Mumbai to coordinate efficiently, accelerating key infrastructure projects. This coordination is crucial for the timely completion of major projects such as the Atal Setu and the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

With the completion of these projects, the state government is now focusing on developing Navi Mumbai as the “third Mumbai.” Fadnavis highlighted plans for an Edutech City, where 60 per cent of data centres will be located, and only 12 universities among the global top 50 will be permitted. This initiative is expected to attract around one lakh students, further boosting the region's educational and technological landscape.

Fadnavis emphasized vertical construction in Mumbai to address space constraints, noting that modern technology ensures high-rise safety. This approach is essential for accommodating the growing population and economic activities in the city.

He also addressed the issue of illegal constructions, particularly in Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, and Vasai-Virar. The introduction of a geo-spatial monitoring system integrated with building plans will help identify and treat unauthorised constructions in real time, ensuring compliance with regulations.

Highlighting the city’s long-standing traffic congestion, Fadnavis cited ongoing projects such as the coastal road, Virar-Alibaug road, parallel roads along the Western Express Highway, and the Worli-Sewri connector. The integration of all metro lines is expected to make city-wide travel possible within 59 minutes, with completion targeted before the 2029 elections.

Fadnavis criticised 'bad' activists for obstructing infrastructure development, referring to instances where Metro III and the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link faced delays despite mitigation measures for environmental concerns. He stressed the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental and safety considerations.

He also emphasized that water bodies in Navi Mumbai will remain protected, with temporary adjustments allowed to accommodate flamingos without disrupting flight paths. The CM reiterated that these initiatives aim to make Mumbai more navigable, modern, and globally competitive, while addressing urban growth and environmental challenges.

Overall, the plans outlined by Fadnavis reflect a comprehensive approach to transforming Mumbai into a more efficient and sustainable city, ensuring a better quality of life for its residents.
