Mumbai's Jog Flyover Repair Budget Swells by Rs 8 Crore
Real Estate Mumbai:Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is facing an unexpected financial hurdle in the ongoing repair and strengthening of the Jog flyover in Andheri. Initially budgeted at around Rs 76 crore, the project now requires an additional Rs 8 crore to strengthen the bridge's columns, as recommended by a joint team from IIT and VJTI.

The repair work was initiated following a critical incident in July last year when a slab from the flyover's underpart fell on a car. This incident prompted the BMC to conduct a thorough inspection and initiate the necessary repairs. The scope of the initial work was based on visual inspections and non-destructive tests. However, during the course of the repairs, destructive tests were carried out, leading to the discovery of additional structural weaknesses that necessitate further strengthening.

A civic official explained, 'While the initial work was being carried out at a cost of about Rs 76 crore, the destructive tests revealed that the columns needed strengthening. This has increased the total cost of the project by approximately Rs 10 crore.' The BMC has already approved an additional Rs 2 crore, but the remaining Rs 8 crore still needs to be covered.

To address this financial gap, the BMC is writing to the Public Works Department (PWD) to either undertake the strengthening work themselves or cover the additional expenses. 'The PWD will have to either reimburse the amount that needs to be spent on strengthening the flyover or carry out the work themselves,' said another BMC official.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by urban infrastructure projects in Mumbai, where unforeseen structural issues can significantly impact the budget and timeline. The BMC is committed to ensuring the safety and durability of the Jog flyover, which is a crucial part of the city's transportation network, serving thousands of commuters daily.
