Navi Mumbai Collects ₹650 Crore in Property Tax, Sees Surge in Digital Payments
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has achieved a notable milestone in property tax collection, amassing ₹650 crore so far in the current financial year. This marks a significant rise in digital payments, which now account for 62% of the total amount collected.
A total of 1,82,894 taxpayers have paid their property taxes, with ₹383 crore, or 62%, coming from digital payment methods. The remaining 38%, or ₹267 crore, was collected through offline channels, according to a statement released by the civic body.
The shift towards digital payments is attributed to the convenience and transparency offered by online payment options. Citizens are increasingly opting to pay their taxes from the comfort of their homes, reducing the need for physical visits to municipal offices. This trend not only enhances efficiency but also ensures a more streamlined and secure payment process.
To ensure compliance and timely payment, the NMMC has taken stringent measures against defaulters. The civic body has initiated seizure actions against those who have failed to clear their dues despite multiple reminders. So far, 77 properties have been attached, leading to the recovery of approximately ₹39 crore. Additionally, 1,608 major defaulters have been issued seizure notices with a seven-day and 48-hour advance notice.
The corporation has also begun attachment proceedings against industrial properties and plans to extend these actions to commercial establishments in the near future. This proactive approach aims to bolster the city's revenue collection and ensure that all taxpayers contribute their fair share.
The NMMC's efforts to modernize its tax collection system and enforce strict compliance are commendable. By leveraging digital technology and implementing robust enforcement mechanisms, the civic body is setting a benchmark for other municipalities to follow. This not only enhances the financial health of the city but also promotes a culture of transparency and accountability.
In conclusion, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's success in property tax collection serves as a testament to the effectiveness of digital transformation and stringent enforcement in municipal governance. As the city continues to grow and develop, these measures will play a crucial role in sustaining its progress and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
