Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to open in October 2023, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai’s air travel infrastructure. This new facility will address the growing air traffic demand and position NMIA as the primary gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by the 2030s.

Navi Mumbai International Airport: A Game-Changer for Mumbai’s Air Travel
Real Estate Mumbai:For decades, Mumbai stood out among the world’s largest cities as one of the very few major urban centers served by only a single airport. That is set to change with the commissioning of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which will lift off with a ceremonial inauguration on October 8, and begin operations by December. Once operational, Mumbai will shed its rare distinction, shared only with Dhaka, of being a mega-city in the world’s top 10 by population with just one airport and a single runway, as reported by The Times of India.

Globally, cities such as Tokyo, Delhi, London, and Paris have developed multiple airports or parallel runways to manage growing air traffic. Mumbai’s arrival into this league reflects the urgent need to match demand. Unlike Delhi-NCR, where the Indira Gandhi International Airport will remain dominant with Noida-Jewar airport playing a smaller role, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) faces severe capacity constraints. This makes NMIA not just a supplementary facility but a potential future leader in passenger traffic within a decade.

NMIA will start with a single runway and Terminal 1 capable of handling 20 million passengers annually, compared to CSMIA’s current capacity of 55 million with one runway. According to senior officials at Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, Terminal 1 is expected to saturate within a year, the fastest such timeline in Indian aviation. Terminal 2 is planned for 2029, with a capacity of 30 million, bringing both airports closer in scale by around 2030, each handling between 50 and 60 million passengers.

Looking ahead, the growth of NMIA will be more pronounced in the 2030s. Terminals 3 and 4, scheduled for completion in 2032 and 2036, will add a combined capacity of 40 million passengers, pushing NMIA’s capacity to 90 million annually. In contrast, Mumbai airport, limited by land and infrastructure, will be capped at around 60 million. By then, NMIA is set to become the principal gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Across the world’s largest cities, secondary airports are a necessity. New York operates John F Kennedy alongside Newark and LaGuardia; London has Heathrow supplemented by Gatwick and Stansted; Paris runs Charles de Gaulle alongside Orly and Beauvais. Mumbai, despite being home to over 24 million residents in MMR, has lacked this model for over eight decades. NMIA changes that paradigm.

Mumbai’s existing airport operates on two intersecting runways, which cannot handle simultaneous take-offs and landings at full capacity. Most flights use Runway 27, which has a declared capacity of 46–44 flights per hour but often exceeds that during peak hours. In November 2023, the airport set a record by handling 1,032 flights in a single day. Yet, congestion persists and NMIA is designed to address this growth rather than relieve existing pressure at CSMIA.

According to industry insiders, NMIA will not immediately shift traffic from Mumbai airport. Instead, it will accommodate demand growth that Mumbai airport cannot handle due to capacity constraints. For India’s financial capital, this marks a major shift in air connectivity and growth potential for decades to come.
