Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Surpasses Rs 500 Crore Property Tax Collection in 7 Months
Real Estate Mumbai:The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in Maharashtra has achieved a significant milestone by collecting over Rs 500 crore in property tax in the first seven months of the current financial year, from April to October. This impressive feat is credited to a combination of people-oriented initiatives and technological integration, as reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The tax was collected from 1.63 lakh property owners across the eight NMMC divisions. Municipal commissioner and administrator Dr Kailash Shinde highlighted the key factors behind this success. “The property tax department of the NMMC has achieved a remarkable feat by collecting over Rs 500 crore in taxes in the first seven months of the financial year 2025-26 from April to October. This leap in tax collection has been possible due to people-oriented initiatives, promotion of digital payments, various awareness campaigns implemented to create awareness among taxpayers, and the cooperation of citizens,” he said, according to the PTI.

Out of the total tax collection of Rs 500.11 crore, payments done through digital platforms accounted for Rs 313.70 crore, while the offline collection was Rs 186.41 crore. The NMMC has set the ambitious target of collecting Rs 1,000 crore in property tax this year, as stated by the public relations officer Mahendra Konde.

The success of the NMMC is not an isolated incident. Earlier this year, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) reported collecting Rs 810 crore in property tax, achieving 95 per cent of its target. The property tax collection in Thane increased by Rs 108 crore from Rs 702 crore collected in 2023-24. Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao expressed gratitude to taxpayers and credited the efficient digital payment options and planned tax collection efforts.

The TMC utilized various methods to facilitate property tax payments, including online links, direct debit, credit/debit cards, cheques, and ATMs. The civic body set up 21 collection centres, including special mobile van camps in housing societies. Public appeals through SMS reminders, auto-rickshaw campaigns, and social media also played a crucial role in the process. Warrants, property seizures, and service interruptions were issued to defaulters to ensure compliance.

The Majiwada-Manpada administrative ward topped the list in tax collection with Rs 246.14 crore, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted efforts and community engagement.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's success in property tax collection is a testament to the power of combining technology with community-oriented initiatives. As the NMMC continues to push towards its annual target, it sets a high standard for other municipal corporations in the region. The efficient use of digital platforms and proactive public engagement strategies are key lessons that can be applied to other municipal tax collection efforts, ensuring a more transparent and efficient system for all stakeholders.
