New IT Park in Purandar to Boost Pune's Tech Ecosystem

The Maharashtra government has announced plans to develop a large IT park in Purandar taluka near Pune, close to the proposed Purandar International Airport. The project aims to expand Pune’s technology ecosystem while reducing pressure on existing IT hubs such as Hinjewadi.

The initiative is expected to boost regional development, attract technology companies, and create thousands of new jobs in the Pune metropolitan region.

Why the Government Is Building the IT Park

Pune is already one of India’s largest IT hubs, with major technology parks like Hinjewadi, Magarpatta, and Kharadi hosting hundreds of companies. However, these areas are facing traffic congestion, limited expansion space, and infrastructure pressure.

The proposed Purandar IT Park aims to decentralize the IT industry by creating a new technology corridor outside the city. By offering more space and modern infrastructure, the government hopes to attract both new companies and firms looking to relocate from crowded tech zones.

Strategic Location Near New International Airport

One of the biggest advantages of the proposed IT park is its location near the upcoming Purandar International Airport. The airport project is being developed to address capacity constraints at Pune’s current Lohegaon airport and support future growth in air traffic.

The IT park is expected to be located just a few kilometres from the airport, providing strong connectivity for global companies, international travellers, and cargo logistics. This proximity could make the area attractive for multinational firms looking for better connectivity and modern infrastructure.

Large Land Allocation for the Project

The proposed IT park may be developed on around 1,500 acres of government-owned land in villages such as Dive, Chambali, and Kodit in Purandar taluka. Using government land will help reduce the cost and time required for land acquisition, allowing the project to move forward faster once approvals are completed.

Officials are currently working on transferring the land from the revenue department to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which will oversee the development of the IT hub.

Potential to Create Massive Employment

The Purandar IT Park could generate up to one lakh jobs once it becomes operational. Industry experts say the project could transform the region into a major technology and innovation cluster, similar to Hinjewadi but with better planning and infrastructure.

The development may also boost real estate, logistics, and transportation sectors in the surrounding areas.
