Nhava Village Committee Protests ONGC’s Plan to Shift Supply Base, Citing Job Losses
Navi Mumbai: The Nhava Village Committee, fearing the loss of around 650 jobs, has strongly opposed the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC)’s plan to transfer material movement from the Nhava Supply Base to the Pipavav Supply Base in Gujarat. This decision has sparked significant concern among the local community, leading to protests and multiple meetings with ONGC officials, but with little resolution.
A protest rally was organized, followed by two meetings held last week—on Tuesday at Bandra and on Thursday at Nhava. Despite these efforts, the committee feels that their concerns have been largely ignored by ONGC. One of the committee members stated, “Around 70% of the work will be reduced at Nhava, causing a significant loss of jobs for the local workforce employed under a dozen contractors.” The committee has expressed frustration, noting that ONGC has been unresponsive and unavailable for comment on the matter.
The Nhava Supply Base has been a crucial economic hub for the local community, providing employment and fostering economic growth. The potential shift of operations to Gujarat not only threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of workers but also undermines the economic stability of the region. The committee has emphasized the need for ONGC to consider the socio-economic impact of their decision and engage in more transparent and meaningful dialogue with the community.
In a broader context, the Nhava Village Committee’s stance reflects a growing trend of local communities advocating for their rights and economic interests in the face of corporate decisions that may have adverse effects. This case highlights the importance of stakeholder engagement and the need for companies to balance their operational needs with the well-being of the communities they serve.
The committee is now exploring further avenues to voice their concerns, including legal options and reaching out to local politicians and media. They are determined to ensure that the ONGC reconsiders its decision and finds a solution that minimizes the impact on the local workforce and economy.
The Nhava Village Committee’s proactive approach serves as a reminder of the power of community mobilization and the importance of addressing the concerns of those most affected by corporate decisions. As the situation continues to unfold, the focus remains on finding a mutually beneficial solution that preserves jobs and supports the economic development of the region.
