NMC seeks Rs 748 crore from state; civic infra spending at stake

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has renewed its demand for a Rs 748.62 crore grant from the Maharashtra government to compensate for the revenue lost after entertainment tax was subsumed under GST in 2017. The civic body says the shortfall is putting additional pressure on its finances and limiting its ability to spend on civic infrastructure.
Why this matters for property buyers
NMC is the main agency responsible for roads, water supply, drainage and other basic amenities in Nagpur. A persistent revenue gap could delay these projects, especially in newly developing areas where residential projects depend on civic infrastructure. For property buyers, this can affect the overall livability and long-term value of a home.
What NMC is asking for
The corporation has asked the state to release the pending compensation so it can bridge the gap left by the discontinuation of entertainment tax. The administration has started the internal process to press the claim with the state government. Similar demands have been raised by other municipal bodies in Maharashtra after the GST rollout.
Impact on property taxes and development charges
If the grant is not received, NMC may have to depend more on property tax, development charges and other local levies to meet its expenses. This could raise the cost of owning property or getting building approvals. Buyers and investors should track any changes in property tax slabs or ready-reckoner rates in the next budget.
