Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and his wife Usha. It is observed to seek blessings for prosperity, well-being, and longevity. The festival involves a series of rituals over four days, including fasting, holy bathing, and offering prayers to the sun.
Preventing pollution during Chhath Puja is crucial to protect natural water bodies like Banganga Talao. Immersions of idols and offerings can lead to water contamination, affecting the ecological balance and the health of the local community. Ensuring clean water is a fundamental right of every citizen.
The MPCB issued guidelines under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, prohibiting immersions in natural water bodies. The Bombay High Court has also upheld these guidelines, emphasizing the right to clean water and air as fundamental rights.
The BMC and MPCB are responsible for enforcing the legal directives and ensuring compliance. This includes providing alternative artificial immersion tanks, issuing public notices, and deploying personnel to monitor the area during the festivities.
The public can help by using alternative immersion options, such as artificial tanks, and by spreading awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. Participating in community efforts and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable practices can also make a significant difference.
