The Mundhwa land in Pune is historically significant as it was part of the Mahar Watan system, where the colonial British government allocated agricultural land to the Mahar and Ramoshi communities in lieu of salaries for village administration services. This system was abolished in 1958, and the land was transferred to government ownership.
The 272 individuals who approached the revenue ministers for land transfer are likely descendants of the original land owners from the Mahar and Ramoshi communities who were given the land under the Mahar Watan system.
The revenue ministers rejected the land transfer requests because the land was vested in the government and the individuals had no legal claim to it as owners. They were registered as holders of ‘other rights’ in the property card, but this did not confer ownership.
The recent controversy involves a company linked to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's son, Parth, attempting to buy the 40-acre Mundhwa plot. The tehsildar served a show cause notice to the Botanical Survey of India to cancel the lease, and the sub-registrar waived the 7% stamp duty without proper justification.
Both the tehsildar, Suryakant Yeole, and the sub-registrar, Ravindra Taru, were suspended following the controversy. A committee is also investigating the irregularities in the deal, including the waiver of ₹21 crore in stamp duty.
