Pune: PCMC Cracks Down on Property Tax Defaulters by Publishing Names in Newspapers
Pimpri Chinchwad, 18th March 2026: In an effort to boost property tax collections before the financial year concludes, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated a new strategy. The corporation has started publishing the names of major tax defaulters in newspapers, a move aimed at pressuring them to pay their dues and avoid public embarrassment.
The officials in the Tax Assessment and Collection Department, led by Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar, have emphasized the importance of this initiative. Pawar urged property owners to take advantage of the ongoing amnesty scheme, which offers a significant waiver on penalties for delayed payments. This scheme is designed to encourage prompt settlement of pending taxes.
So far, 5,60,473 registered property owners within PCMC limits have paid a total of Rs 817.43 crore, against the civic body’s target of Rs 1,000 crore for the current financial year. The department, which operates through 18 zonal offices, has started publishing the names of defaulters with dues exceeding Rs 1 lakh. This list includes residential owners, shopkeepers, industrial units, landholders, institutions, and banks.
More than 800 defaulters’ names have been published so far, and this action has already prompted some to clear their dues. Civic officials have warned that those who fail to pay may face further legal and administrative actions. The municipal corporation has already taken stringent measures such as property attachments and disconnection of water supply to recover pending dues.
With only a few days left in the financial year, the PCMC has set up additional cash counters and extended working hours, allowing citizens to pay taxes even on public holidays. Lists of defaulters from areas such as Wakad, Akurdi, Kasarwadi, Chikhali, Chinchwad, and Charholi have already been made public.
The administration has attached over 80 properties belonging to chronic defaulters and has indicated that these properties may be auctioned in the next financial year if the dues remain unpaid. According to the officials, 2,03,772 property owners collectively owe Rs 622.42 crore in dues. To enhance recovery efforts, the civic body has introduced an amnesty scheme that offers a 90 per cent waiver on penalties for delayed payments.
This comprehensive approach by the PCMC aims to ensure that the financial targets are met and that the civic infrastructure and services can continue to be funded and improved for the benefit of the community.
