Pune Real Estate Agent Falls Victim to $60,000 Dropshipping Scam
Pune: Cybercriminals have duped a real estate agent from Dhanori, Pune, of Rs 5.8 lakh between September last year and January. The scam involved the promise of a lucrative franchise of a dropshipping platform, with the potential to earn up to Rs 10 lakh per month.
The victim filed an online complaint in February. After preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Vishrantwadi police on Friday. An officer from the Vishrantwadi police explained that the fraudsters contacted the victim through a social media platform. They offered him the franchise of an online dropshipping platform, assuring him of the opportunity to earn up to Rs 10 lakh per month. They also promised to assist in identifying products and customers.
The crooks shared a link to a website where the victim could allegedly check his orders and profits. Between September last year and January, the victim transferred Rs 6 lakh from his and his wife's bank accounts to different account numbers provided by the fraudsters. The victim was told that he had earned a profit of Rs 14 lakh on his investments. However, he was only allowed to withdraw Rs 22,000.
When the victim tried to withdraw his profit amount, the fraudsters began demanding more money for various reasons. Realizing he was being duped, the victim approached the police. The Vishrantwadi police are now investigating the case and are working to trace the perpetrators.
Dropshipping is a popular business model where the seller does not keep the products in stock. Instead, when a store sells a product, it purchases the item from a third party and has it shipped directly to the customer. This model reduces the need for inventory management and can be highly profitable if managed correctly. However, it also attracts scammers who prey on individuals looking for quick and easy ways to make money.
Real estate agents, like the victim in this case, are often targeted due to their financial stability and willingness to explore new business opportunities. It is crucial for individuals to conduct thorough research and verify the legitimacy of any business opportunity before investing any money. If an offer seems too good to be true, it often is.
The Vishrantwadi police urge anyone who has been a victim of a similar scam to come forward and report the incident. They are working diligently to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for these fraudulent activities.
In the meantime, the real estate agent is working to recover his losses and has vowed to be more cautious in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of due diligence and skepticism when presented with seemingly lucrative business opportunities.
