Whale phishing is a sophisticated form of spear phishing that targets high-profile individuals within a company. These attacks are highly personalized and often involve the use of publicly available information to craft convincing messages.
Companies can protect themselves by implementing robust cybersecurity protocols, educating employees about the signs of phishing attacks, and verifying the authenticity of financial requests through multiple channels.
Employees should immediately report any suspicious activity to their IT department or designated cybersecurity officer. They should also refrain from clicking on any links or providing sensitive information until the authenticity of the request is confirmed.
Whale phishing attacks have become increasingly common, particularly in the corporate sector. In Pune alone, nearly a dozen such cases have been reported since July last year.
Common indicators include unsolicited requests for sensitive information, urgent or threatening language, and discrepancies in the sender’s email address or phone number. Employees should always verify the authenticity of such requests before taking any action.
