Pune's Historic Mandai Gets a Lighting Makeover with 50 New Electric Lights
Shukrawar Peth, 24th January 2026: The long-standing issue of inadequate lighting at Mahatma Phule Mandai, one of Pune’s busiest and oldest marketplaces, has been resolved within three days with the installation of new electric lights. Newly elected corporator Raghavendra “Bappu” Mankar took swift action after inspecting the area and responding to concerns raised by local traders.
Mahatma Phule Mandai, which has a 135-year-old heritage and serves as a major commercial hub in the heart of the city, was facing serious lighting problems due to outdated and malfunctioning fixtures. Traders and shoppers had been struggling with poor visibility, especially during evening hours, raising safety and security concerns.
During a visit earlier this week, Mankar was informed by shopkeepers that several lights had lost their capacity and many were no longer functional. Acting on the complaints, he immediately initiated work to replace the defective units. Within three days, around 50 new electric lights were installed, significantly improving illumination across the market area.
After reviewing the completed work, Mankar said, “We took up this issue on a priority basis as both traders and citizens were facing difficulties. Many of the old lights had weakened, so new ones have been installed to ensure adequate lighting. This was an urgent requirement. In the coming days, we will take up comprehensive electrical work for the entire Mandai area. Since people from across the city visit this market, we will remain committed to resolving other local issues as well.”
Traders welcomed the development and expressed satisfaction with the quick response. “Due to old and insufficient lighting, the safety of both shopkeepers and customers was at risk. Once we brought this to Bappu Mankar’s notice, he acted immediately. We are happy that the work was completed so quickly,” a group of merchants said.
