Rs 30,000 Crore Property Dispute: Sunjay Kapur's Family Battle Explained
Real Estate Mumbai:A legal battle has erupted over the Rs 30,000 crore estate of late billionaire Sunjay Kapur. The dispute involves his widow, Priya Sachdev, and his children from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor. Sunjay Kapur passed away in June 2025 from a heart attack in London. He was married to Priya since 2017, while he had been previously married to Karisma from 2003 to 2016. Sunjay founded and served as chairman of Sona Comstar, an automobile manufacturer.

Karisma Kapoor's daughters, Samaira and Kiaan, filed a civil complaint in the Delhi High Court, alleging that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, attempted to fake their father's will. The court has ordered Priya Kapur to reveal all moveable and immovable assets of Sunjay Kapur as of June 12, 2025, the date he died. In a surprising turn of events, Sunjay Kapur's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has come out in support of Karisma's children.

Priya, through her lawyer Rajiv Nayyar, has countered these allegations. She claimed that Karisma had been away from Sunjay's life for 15 years before suddenly reappearing after his death. “I'm his legal wife. The claims of love and affection—where was all this when they waged lengthy divorce legal battles in the Supreme Court?” Rajiv said in court.

Karisma Kapoor's daughters, Samaira and Kiaan, have also filed a petition with the Delhi High Court, seeking a share of their late father's assets. In their appeal, they alleged that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, fabricated Sunjay's will. They claimed that their father's putative will is forged and contrived, rather than a legitimate and authentic document. They further stated that neither the original nor a copy of the alleged will were disclosed to them. As a result, the children sought the court to supply them with a copy of the document in question.

The senior advocate on behalf of mother Rani Kapur, Vaibhav Gaggar, told ANI, “This fight is really more between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev—whether there is a will or there is no will, etc. Rani Kapur does get impacted by it, but she will file a response and you will know her stand.” He added, “She [Rani Kapur] has been made defendant number 3 in her capacity as a 1st heir of Sunjay Kapur...now that the matters are coming to court, it would not be appropriate for me to give any further comments.”

The legal battle over Sunjay Kapur's estate is expected to be a lengthy and complex one, with multiple parties and significant financial stakes involved. The outcome of this case will likely have far-reaching implications for the family and the business empire left behind by the late industrialist.
