Scrap Bidadi Township, Sharavathi and Cricket Stadium Projects or Face Protests: Yatnal
Vijayapura: Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal on Tuesday issued a stern warning to the Karnataka government. He threatened protests both inside and outside the legislature if the government does not scrap the proposed Bidadi Township, Sharavathi Pumped Storage, and Anekal cricket stadium projects at the forthcoming Cabinet meeting.
Describing the Bidadi Township project as a 'death warrant for farmers' and the Sharavathi Pumped Storage project as a threat to the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, Yatnal accused the Congress government of prioritizing real estate and influential capitalist interests over the welfare of farmers.
'It is condemnable that the government, having surrendered to pressure from the real estate lobby and capitalist interests, is forcibly acquiring farmers' lands. Farmers in Bidadi are prosperous and cultivate a variety of crops including silk, mango, arecanut, banana, vegetables, jackfruit, and guava. The government's move to acquire nearly 6,500 acres of highly fertile and irrigated agricultural land for residential purposes is irrational,' Yatnal said.
Yatnal further accused the government of yielding to vested interests, stating that the decision to earmark fertile farmland for housing projects and urban development reflects a lack of long-term planning and vision. He emphasized that the farmers in Bidadi are not just agricultural workers but are also significant contributors to the local economy.
The MLA called on the government to reconsider its stance and prioritize sustainable development over short-term gains. He highlighted the ecological importance of the Western Ghats and the potential long-term damage that the Sharavathi Pumped Storage project could cause. Yatnal also pointed out that the Anekal cricket stadium project, while potentially beneficial for sports, does not justify the displacement of farmers and the loss of agricultural land.
Yatnal's warnings come at a time when there is growing unrest among farmers and environmental activists in Karnataka. They are concerned about the government's policies that seem to favor urban development and real estate interests over the well-being of rural communities and the environment.
The Bijapur City MLA urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with farmers and other stakeholders to find a balanced approach that benefits all sections of society. He emphasized that the government's decisions should be guided by the principles of equity and sustainability.
If the government fails to address these concerns and continues with the proposed projects, Yatnal has vowed to mobilize a strong protest movement. He believes that the voice of the farmers and environmentalists must be heard and respected in the decision-making process.
The coming weeks will be crucial as the Karnataka government is expected to review these projects in the upcoming Cabinet meeting. The outcome of this review will have significant implications for the farmers of Bidadi and the ecological balance of the Western Ghats.
