SEBI Allows REITs, InvITs to Issue Depository Receipts

By GeoSquare News Desk · Published 2026-11-03

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has permitted Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) to issue depository receipts (DRs). This move is set to widen the investor base for these instruments, allowing foreign investors to participate more easily in India's real estate and infrastructure sectors.

What Are Depository Receipts?

Depository receipts are financial instruments that represent ownership in shares or units of a company listed on a foreign exchange. By allowing REITs and InvITs to issue DRs, SEBI enables these trusts to attract global capital without requiring foreign investors to directly hold units in Indian markets.

Impact on Maharashtra's Real Estate

Maharashtra, being a hub for commercial and residential real estate, stands to benefit significantly. REITs with properties in Mumbai, Pune, and other cities can now tap into international funds, potentially increasing liquidity and driving further development. This could lead to more transparent and professionally managed real estate assets in the state.

Investor Benefits

For investors, this development offers easier access to Indian real estate through global exchanges. It also enhances the credibility of REITs and InvITs, as they will now comply with international listing standards. This is expected to boost confidence among both domestic and foreign investors, fostering a healthier investment ecosystem.
