Sena (UBT) Demands 20% Reservation for Marathi Speakers in Mumbai Buildings
Real Estate Mumbai:The Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmakers on Friday demanded that 20 per cent of houses in buildings in Mumbai be reserved for native Marathi speakers. This demand was made by Leader of Opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve and Milind Narvekar, who presented a letter to Minister Shambhuraj Desai, a member of the rival Shiv Sena.

Narvekar posted on X, stating, “We demand 20 per cent of houses in buildings in Mumbai for Marathi Manoos.” The issue was previously raised in the legislative council on Thursday, where Narvekar inquired whether a social organization had demanded a 50 per cent housing quota for Marathi people and whether the government had taken any action on it.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also serves as the Housing Minister, stated in a written reply that his department had not received any such letter. Mines Minister Shambhuraj Desai, replying on behalf of Shinde, pointed out that during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's tenure from 2019 to 2022, led by Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, no such law was introduced. Desai further added, “You did not do it, and this has come on record. Your love for Marathi Manoos is fake and hollow.”

The demand for housing quotas for Marathi speakers reflects the ongoing debate over the representation and rights of native residents in Mumbai's rapidly developing real estate market. The city, known for its diverse population and economic opportunities, has seen increasing discussions about ensuring fair access to housing for all communities.
