Speeding Mercedes Crashes into Parked Container on Mumbai–Pune Expressway, 4 Injured
Gahunje, 23rd January 2026: Four people were seriously injured in a major road accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway near the Gahunje area after a speeding Mercedes car crashed into a container parked on the roadside late Friday.
According to the police, the luxury car was travelling at a high speed when the driver allegedly lost control and slammed into the stationary container. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the Mercedes was completely mangled, leaving the occupants trapped inside for a brief period.
Police and emergency teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the crash and immediately launched a rescue operation. All four injured persons were pulled out from the damaged vehicle and shifted to a private hospital near Somatane Phata for urgent medical treatment. Their condition is reported to be serious but stable.
An officer from the Highway Police said, “The accident appears to have been caused by overspeeding. The presence of a parked heavy vehicle on a high-speed expressway is also a matter of concern. We are investigating whether proper safety measures and warning signs were in place.”
The incident has raised concerns about the safety standards on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, a vital artery connecting two major cities. The expressway is known for its high traffic volume, and such accidents can have severe consequences. Authorities have urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and be cautious, especially when heavy vehicles are present on the roadside.
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is a 94.2 km (58.5 miles) long six-lane tolled expressway that significantly reduces travel time between the two cities. However, the road's high speed and frequent use by both passenger and commercial vehicles make it a critical area for safety measures and regulations. The highway police and transport authorities are expected to review and enhance safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
Residents and regular users of the expressway have expressed their concerns and have called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and better management of heavy vehicle parking. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for continuous improvement in infrastructure and enforcement.
